Know your harvester
Catch a Piece of Maine offers not only the freshest tastes of Maine, but the story behind the harvest. We want you to know your lobsterman. Every shipment of lobster details when, where and by whom your lobsters were caught. This direct supply-chain relationship between you and your lobsterman is at the heart of Catch a Piece of Maine.Support the Working Waterfront
Community Supported Fishery Model
Catch a Piece of Maine’s community supported fishery model directly supports lobsterman and the working waterfront of Maine. Your support allows lobstermen to receive a premium for their product at a time when external economic factors make it hard to make a living from the sea. Lobstering is more than a job; it is a way of life.
Sustainably Harvested Resource
Catch a Piece of Maine lobstermen are stewards of the sea, always taking the extra precaution to make sure today’s catch will be available for tomorrow’s lobstermen. Maine lobstering differs from the destructive methods of net fishing and bottom dragging; there is no by-catch. Lobster traps are designed so that small lobsters can feed and leave. By law, Maine lobstermen measure the lobsters. All lobsters under or over the measure are sent back into the ocean to maintain the breeding stock for the future of the industry. Marine scientists report that one 5-pound female lobster can produce 14 times as many eggs as a 1-pounder.
Education
10% of profits are donated to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, educating 5th and 6th grade students about the Maine lobster industry. We believe education is an important step in the preservation of our valuable resource.
Share in a Maine Tradition
According to the Island Institute 2007 Access Report, of the 5,300 miles of the Maine coast, only 20 miles remain as working waterfront. As the next generation of Maine lobstermen it is both our honor and obligation to preserve and share this heritage. Purchasing a trap from Catch a Piece of Maine helps the working waterfront, gives back to the community and sends a message that you share Maine values.
